After months of anticipation and a turbulent period behind the scenes, Subnautica 2 has officially been confirmed for Early Access release in May 2026. The announcement comes from Unknown Worlds head Steve Papoutsis, who stated that the development team has "unanimously determined" the game is ready to enter Early Access.

Milestone Review Passed

The confirmation follows the game passing Krafton's internal milestone review, a significant hurdle that greenlit the May release window. Since the last major update, the team has been hard at work adding more story chapters, creating new creatures and biomes, and implementing numerous additional features.

A Turbulent Road to Release

The road to this announcement hasn't been smooth. In July 2025, co-founders Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire were replaced by new CEO Steve Papoutsis. The former creators filed a lawsuit alleging Krafton deliberately delayed the game to avoid paying a $250 million performance bonus.

However, a Delaware court ruling on March 17, 2026, officially reinstated Ted Gill as CEO of Unknown Worlds Entertainment, resolving the bitter dispute. The court also extended revenue milestone deadlines to September 2026.

What to Expect at Launch

The Early Access build will launch with a wealth of content:

  • 4-player online co-op multiplayer
  • Multiple story chapters to explore
  • Diverse biomes with unique ecosystems
  • New creatures including the Collector Leviathan
  • Procedural base-building system
  • New vehicles including the Tadpole submersible
  • DNA Modification System for character adaptation
  • Cross-platform multiplayer support

Platforms and Availability

Subnautica 2 will launch into Early Access on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store) and Xbox Series X|S. The game is also confirmed as a Day 1 Xbox Game Pass title, making it accessible to millions of subscribers from launch.

The game has accumulated approximately 4 million Steam wishlists, demonstrating the massive anticipation for the sequel.

Looking Ahead

Despite the legal tensions between the developer and publisher, Krafton confirmed it will proceed with the May release to "minimize disruption to the team and to the release plan." The full v1.0 release is estimated for 2027-2028, with 2-3 years of Early Access development planned.
